This song memorializes Steve Paquette, RIP, and the now defunct band Years of Silence that he co-founded. My experience in Years of Silence changed my life and inspired me to become a better songwriter and a better man. Many of the lyrics in the song are references to Years of Silence song titles, lyrics or their Rise for the Fall tour.
Lyrics
well all is wrong, but it feels like home
we're silent but not forgotten
it was steve who found us, lost in the city
northern winter nights in all our hearts
from the first chord we were part of something bigger:
something that would not be kept silent
like a bullet screams through silence
conflicts tear through years
final as an open casket
like rivers run to seas
fights always end in tears
nothing good has ever lasted
silent but not forgotten
we lived for those days, on the road or the stage
but discord grew
staring at you, staring at your shoes
our silence echoed everywhere
steve and i were always fighting
too similar, it's true
and when the tour ended, well the band did too
steve never fit in the city; a northern boy through and through
with the band gone, there was nothing left for him to do
so steve went back home, and 6 days before christmas
he died in that cold dark north
like a bullet screams through silence
conflicts tear through years
final as an open casket
like rivers run to seas
fights always end in tears
nothing good has ever lasted
silent but not forgotten
rise for the fall!
held hostage to ourselves
a tour to end it all
appalachian mountain roads lead us to our exit scene
a true psychomachy
one day, we'll waste away and be silent but not forgotten
